SUMMARY:Shinneock Indian Powwow Summer Benefit
DESCRIPTION:The Shinnecock Indian Powwow is one of the largest Native American gatherings on the East Coast. As we dance upon the earth\, we are reminded that our culture and love for one another are the resounding heartbeat that transcends all that we face\, wherever we face it. We may be the only nation that dances upon its drum\, and the sound of the drum and our footsteps are recorded year after year within it. The trees that surround our circle also record our Powwow historical moments within their barks as they grow with the people. \nDuring each Labor Day weekend\, we welcome home our distant families as well as our guests with open arms and prayers. We share ourselves\, our culture\, arts and crafts\, good food\, and our ceremonies. Our first Grand Entry of dancers from all over the Americas occurs at 7pm on Friday\, preceded by a second Grand Entry at 12:30pm and 7pm on the days that follow\, with the exception of Monday. We host competitive dancing\, guest entertainment\, prayers\, ceremonial dances\, the acknowledgement of sponsors\, and visiting dignitaries. We also honor our veterans. \nWe conclude the Powwow with the awarding of prizes to our competing drums and dancers on Monday evening at 6pm. We also host 100 Native American arts\, crafts\, and food vendors from all over the Americas. Cultural enrichment and the opportunity for cultural education abound\, as Native American representatives from every region are available to demonstrate and share their stories with all who ask. \nThis celebration of tradition has been fostered by our community leaders and the Shinnecock Church\, to whom we are forever grateful. Each year\, as we fill ourselves with the excitement of the upcoming Powwow celebration\, we are reminded of the other things we are thankful for. We thank our patrons for joining us each year\, and may your way continue to be beautiful. \nThank you.

SUMMARY:STIRES-STARK ALUMNI RECITAL WITH DANBI UM\, VIOLIN
DESCRIPTION:As a young violin student at Juilliard\, Toby Perlman imagined an antidote to the competitive and isolating environment that exceptional young artists often grapple with in the pursuit of their craft. \nIn the summer of 1994\, along with her husband Itzhak\, Toby established The Perlman Music Program for aspiring young violinists\, violists\, cellists\, bassists\, and pianists. In 2000\, a visionary group of supporters secured the program’s 28-acre home on Shelter Island overlooking Crescent Beach. This peaceful\, secluded campus is the perfect setting for students to escape the demands of their complicated lives and come together to form a lasting community. \nToby’s dream is based on a deceptively simple idea: meet the needs of each child\, respect and trust students\, and immerse them in a nurturing environment that emphasizes connection over competition. At PMP\, our young musicians learn how to be in the world. They collaborate\, support each other\, and contribute to camp life. Our faculty look beyond the surface of technical proficiency and focus on their students’ potential to be interesting artists. We safeguard talent and individuality\, and encourage kids to explore\, take risks\, and develop at their own pace. \nToday\, PMP provides a vibrant curriculum of programs\, residencies\, concerts\, mentorship\, and educational engagement\, filling more than 300 days of the year. The most promising young musicians from across the world have a platform to thrive\, make music together\, challenge each other\, form life-long bonds\, and transform their potential into a life-changing reality.

SUMMARY:Ellen Hermanson Summer Gala
DESCRIPTION: \nEllen Hermanson was an articulate\, courageous and indomitable warrior in the war against breast cancer. Her personal battle with the disease began in February 1989\, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer while still nursing her six-month-old daughter. Ellen fought against her disease medically by undergoing surgery and aggressive chemotherapy. \nEllen also fought against breast cancer by becoming an activist and advocate. A journalist by training\, she used her prodigious talent as a writer to give voice to the needs of breast cancer survivors and to educate her readers about the importance of being well informed\, the challenges of living with breast cancer\, and the availability of resources to help with the myriad problems that arise as a result of breast cancer. Her remarkable accomplishments attest to her extraordinary inner strength and selfless generosity. \nELLEN BECAME…\nan active member of the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS)\, which advocates for survivors of all types of cancer. Later she served on its board and edited its quarterly newsletter\, The Networker. When Ellen looked to her own heritage for spiritual support and sustenance\, she found that what she sought did not exist. Instead of bemoaning this lack\, Ellen became one of the founders of the Jewish Healing Center. She also served as the organization’s founding executive director and the first editor of its newsletter\, The Outstretched Arm. \nIN THE SPRING OF 1992\,\nEllen was appointed the first executive director of the Judges and Lawyers Breast Cancer Alert. Ellen coordinated and organized their annual October symposium\, bringing together doctors and lawyers to tackle cutting-edge issues in health law and policy confronting cancer patients. In the fall of 1992\, Ellen was diagnosed with a recurrence of her disease\, this time in her bones. Ellen continued her work. Although she underwent chemotherapy\, and would remain on chemo for the rest of her life\, her condition worsened. Ellen’s many projects included editing the Annual Report of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center for 1993. In November 1994\, Ellen delivered an important speech entitled “One Patient’s Pain” at the NCCS annual conference. She was weak\, barely able to walk\, and facing hip replacement surgery that her doctors agreed to delay until after the conference. It was at this conference that Justice Sandra Day O’Connor spoke of her breast cancer. \nEllen lost her hard-fought battle with breast cancer on April 11\, 1995\, at the age of 42. She was working on an article exploring the then new and exciting potential of the Internet as a source of information and sharing for patients and their families. Ellen left a legacy of dignity\, courage\, determination\, grace and love to all who knew her. To honor her memory\, The Ellen Hermanson Foundation has been established to support and continue the important work she began.

SUMMARY:Ellens Run
DESCRIPTION:Ellen Hermanson was an articulate\, courageous and indomitable warrior in the war against breast cancer. Her personal battle with the disease began in February 1989\, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer while still nursing her six-month-old daughter. Ellen fought against her disease medically by undergoing surgery and aggressive chemotherapy.\nEllen became an active member of the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS)\, which advocates for survivors of all types of cancer. \nThe 28th annual Ellens Run 5k is an event you don’t want to miss. Bring your running shoes and help support a beautiful cause! \n  \nWhether you run\, walk\, or cheer us on virtually\, your registration supports critically needed access to breast health care. Thank you for your support!
