A Hazy Shade of Winter

What should one pack for the Hamptons during fall or winter? Looks for less.

This article may seem unnecessary and for many it is. However, I used to receive up to 15 calls per week at the Social Life Magazine office about events that were in production. Many were about what train or bus to take, where to stay, where to eat, or what to wear. I had frequently seen ladies in patent leather Louboutin stilettos and black pencil skirts stomping the divots at polo.

I created an internship opening as the constant queries were exhausting. I contacted Columbia University and by the end of the day, there were 18 applicants. In the end, I picked a pretty surfer. Why? A surfer is agile, strong, not apt to complain about pain, and must be one step ahead of every element or possible interaction while in the water. If I threw a stack of magazines at her, literally… I wouldn’t expect a grimace. I started working in the industry while I went to college and we delivered the magazine ourselves. It was a difficult task, these things are heavy. I assumed that this skill set would transfer to the streets of New York or the events scene in the Hamptons. And it did. She was always one step ahead of me, exactly what I wanted.

On Wainscott Hollow Road, Wainscott, a crooked little “witches’ house” used to stand at the Strong Family Potato Farm at the entrance of a vast field.  This tiny 1920s 224-square-foot single-room structure represented the East End’s agricultural past. It narrowly escaped demolition as it was saved by the preservation efforts led by Esperanza Leon, a member of East Hampton Town’s Architectural Review Board. It originally housed migrant workers from the South, but had sat neglected since the 1980s. Yes, the 1980s.

First of all, I tend to avoid the color black. I removed my black clothing years ago and donated 26 black dresses to charity. Black is a strong color that is outwardly ominous, intimidating, and unfriendly, and can make one look unhealthy. Try navy. It’s a trustworthy color, great for business, and goes fabulously well with other colors, especially winter white, goldenrod, and poppy. The subways of New York are filled with black. Don’t be like every other New Yorker, especially Out East.

Winter white is my favorite color followed by poppy, golden rod, and most recently light peach. I use a little blush on my face to make it look like I’m sun-kissed in the winter. Less is more especially in the colder months Out East.

The jodhpurs were adapted from an ancient style of Indian trouser called the churidar, which is tight around the calf and loose at the hips. It is still worn at traditional Jodhpuri weddings. Pratap Singh, a younger son of the Maharaja of Jodhpur, Takht Singh, popularised in England the style of riding trousers worn in Jodhpur, a design that he apparently improved and perfected and first had tailored in India around 1890.

Singh was an avid polo player. When he visited Queen Victoria in England during her Diamond Jubilee celebrations of 1897, he brought his entire polo team, who caused a sensation among the fashionable circles of the United Kingdom by their riding clothes. In addition, they won many polo matches. Singh’s jodhpur style of flared thigh and hip was rapidly taken up by the British polo-playing community, who adapted it to the existing designs of English riding breeches, which ended snugly at mid-calf and were worn with tall riding boots.

The British Navy began adopting duffle coats in the 1880s, and they became known as “convoy coats”.
